Smart DNS is not working
4 min read·Updated September 16, 2026
Check plan access, address authorization, DNS entries, and device settings without changing router security controls.
- 1Open Smart DNS in the dashboard from the same home network as the device
- 2Confirm the feature is enabled for the plan and at least one resolver address is available
- 3Authorize the current public internet address again if the entry expired or the address changed
- 4Confirm every resolver address is entered exactly in the device's manual DNS fields
- 5Reconnect or restart the device so it requests DNS settings again
- 6Temporarily disable Private DNS, Secure DNS, DNS-over-HTTPS, or iCloud Private Relay on that device and retest
- Test while the device is on the authorized Wi-Fi, not mobile data or a different network
- If only one outside service fails, its account region or Smart DNS support may be the cause
- If no Smart DNS server is shown, wait and retry rather than entering an address from an old screenshot
Do not open router ports, disable the router firewall, or publish your home public IP to troubleshoot Smart DNS. Contact support with the dashboard message and device type, not screenshots containing unrelated network details.
