Setup guide: Router (DD-WRT / OpenWrt)
5 min read·Updated April 20, 2026
Configure HorizonVPN on your home router to protect every device on your network.
Router support depends on your router model, firmware, and the configuration files available for your account. Contact support before changing router VPN settings.
- Requirements: router running DD-WRT, OpenWrt, or Tomato firmware
- You'll need: compatible VPN configuration files from HorizonVPN support
- Recommended first step: set up the official app on one device before attempting router-wide VPN
DD-WRT setup
- 1Log in to your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1)
- 2Go to Services → VPN → OpenVPN Client
- 3Enable the OpenVPN client if support has provided an .ovpn profile
- 4Paste the configuration exactly as provided
- 5Save and Apply, then test one device before routing your whole network
Router VPN reduces connection speed due to the router's limited processing power. Consider a router with AES-NI hardware acceleration for better performance.
