Research and understand
Open Gemini to explore a topic, work through an explanation or organize research notes. Check that a small prompt receives a reply before starting a long session.
A better route to your next idea
Keep your connection moving. Get back to creating.
Use HorizonVPN to change the network route and public IP used to reach Google Gemini. Connect on your phone or computer, check the service you need, and get back to research, writing and code.
Google’s region, account and feature requirements still apply. A HorizonVPN plan does not include a Google AI subscription.
The short answer
A VPN can carry your Gemini connection through another network route. When that traffic uses the VPN tunnel, Google sees the VPN exit’s public IP rather than your direct connection’s public IP. This can help when the obstacle is the network route, but it does not change your Google account’s eligibility or make every VPN address acceptable to Google.
First identify the product and the exact error. A country message, a blocked connection and an exhausted quota need different checks.
For the work you opened Gemini to do
Keep a usable connection to the AI tools you already use, whether you are at your desk, on your phone or moving between networks.
Open Gemini to explore a topic, work through an explanation or organize research notes. Check that a small prompt receives a reply before starting a long session.
Continue a draft, rework an outline or compare wording on your laptop and phone. Which Google features you can use depends on the account, product and plan.
Use the browser for AI Studio experiments and check local or hosted API connections separately. Your code’s network path matters just as much as the browser’s.
Start with the right Gemini
Check the requirements for the product that displays the error. A working Gemini chat does not establish that AI Studio, an API project or a paid feature is available to the same account.
gemini.google.com
Start here for the browser-based assistant. Google publishes a web-specific country list and sign-in requirements. Language support does not mean the product is available in every country where that language is spoken.

Check Google’s mobile availability and device requirements separately. If the web version works but the app is unavailable, the app-store, device or account requirements may be the next thing to review.

These developer services use a separate available-regions list. Google’s developer terms require users to be at least 18 and to access the services only from available regions. Check the current account, project and usage requirements before testing.
Read Google’s requirementsYour connection, step by step
Start with one device, one account and one simple task. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to find a route that works for your connection.
Choose the download for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone and iPad. Use the access shown in the app; locations, allowances and connection options depend on your device and account.
Start with Auto and select an available VPN location where the Google product you need is supported. If the VPN itself struggles to connect, review Connection Compatibility or try another available option, then reconnect. Compatibility and location are separate controls.
Reopen the Gemini website or app using your eligible Google account where required. Send a short, non-sensitive prompt and wait for a reply. For AI Studio, test the specific action you need; a loaded page alone does not verify prompt generation or API access.
If your current location is already supported, comparing with the VPN disconnected can help isolate a VPN-route problem. Only make that comparison when you are comfortable using your direct connection.
Match the connection to the device
Use the Horizon client that carries the traffic you actually need. A browser extension, a native VPN app and a remote API server cover different connections.
Use the full app for Gemini’s mobile app, desktop browsers and local tools whose connections go through the VPN. Follow the client’s actual platform behavior; do not assume a separate remote server shares your device’s connection.
Get the full appUseful when you want to route supported browser traffic to Gemini or AI Studio. The extension does not cover Gemini’s separate mobile app, a terminal SDK process or a hosted backend.
See browser setupCheck the outbound connection of the machine actually sending the API request. A laptop VPN does not move a cloud server or Colab instance to another country. Google specifically applies Colab region checks to the instance’s region.
Read the API region guidanceFind the next useful check
Keep the exact error text. These symptoms help narrow the investigation; none of them alone proves that your provider or Google is blocking the connection.
| What you see | What to check next | Where the VPN fits |
|---|---|---|
| “Gemini isn’t available in your country” | Identify web, mobile or AI Studio first. Check that product’s current region list and your account requirements. Keep the exact message rather than relying on what a chatbot says about availability. | Check the selected exit’s location and the traffic path. Changing IP alone does not establish eligibility. |
| Works without the VPN, fails with it | Repeat the same task with the same account and device. Reconnect using another available location and try again; check for an additional proxy or extension changing the route. | This comparison makes the VPN route worth investigating, but does not identify the exact cause. |
| The web version works, the mobile app does not | Review mobile availability, device requirements and app updates. Check that the full VPN app is connected on the phone; a desktop browser extension does not cover it. | Test the actual phone connection and app, not only a website on another device. |
| AI Studio redirects to Available Regions | Use Google’s AI Studio troubleshooting guidance for region, age verification and account access. A redirect can need an account check even when your country is listed. | Verify the route, then follow the account checks instead of repeatedly switching countries. |
| API 403 or permission denied | Read the full API error and Google’s current guide. Review project access, key permissions, billing or policy restrictions as applicable. Keep API keys out of support screenshots. | The caller’s outbound location can matter; the code may run on a different machine from your browser. |
| API 429 or a quota / limit message | Check the product or project quota and the retry guidance for that exact error. A paid VPN does not provide extra Gemini messages, API credits or Google AI plan access. | Treat a quota message as a quota investigation; changing VPN IP is not a quota upgrade. |
Know what the connection protects
The HorizonVPN tunnel encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server. Gemini’s HTTPS connection continues to protect transport to Google. Google still receives the prompts, uploads and account information you send to its service; using a VPN does not make that content anonymous to Google.
Review the privacy controls and terms for the exact Gemini product you use, especially before uploading confidential work or sending data through an API.
Google’s Gemini privacy guidanceHorizonVPN can route the connection used by Gemini through an available VPN exit. Use the full app for a phone or computer, or the Chrome or Firefox extension for supported browser traffic. Google still applies its own product, account and region requirements; a VPN connection is not a guarantee that a particular Gemini feature will accept the account or IP.
Check which Gemini product shows the message and use its own official country list. The selected exit, an additional proxy, account eligibility or mobile availability can require separate checks. A VPN changes the route and public IP for the traffic it carries, not the Google account’s age, organization policy, subscription or other eligibility requirements.
Choose an available Horizon location where the specific Google product is supported. Start with a nearby suitable location and compare the same task on your own connection. There is no single best country for every user, and a listed country does not guarantee that every VPN exit address will work.
Install the official HorizonVPN app for your phone, allow the system VPN configuration when prompted and connect. Reopen Gemini and test a short prompt. Check Google’s current mobile-country, device and account requirements if the app cannot be installed or opened; connecting a VPN does not itself install an unavailable app.
The extension covers supported traffic inside Chrome or Firefox. It does not route a separate mobile app, a terminal process or code running on a remote server. Use the native Horizon app for supported device traffic, and inspect the outbound path on the actual API-calling machine.
Google’s AI Studio troubleshooting documentation covers region availability, being at least 18 and account age verification. Check those requirements before treating the redirect as a network fault. An eligible user can also investigate the VPN route, but changing countries repeatedly will not fix an unmet account requirement.
The web assistant and the Gemini API have different requirements. Read the exact API error, check the project, key, billing and quota as applicable, and verify the network location of the machine sending the request. If your code runs in Colab or on a cloud server, your laptop’s VPN does not change that machine’s outbound connection.
No. HorizonVPN provides a connection service, not Google AI plan access, model entitlements, storage, API credits or a higher request quota. Check the Google account or API project’s own plan and billing for those features.
No. Google receives the prompts, uploads and account information you submit to Gemini. The VPN tunnel protects the route between your device and the VPN server; it does not remove the content you choose to send to Google or replace the privacy settings of the Gemini product you use.
A VPN changes the public IP used by the traffic it carries. Google describes other location information Gemini can use, including Home or Work addresses and, with permission, precise device location or information from other Google services. Review your Google and device permissions. Those location features do not by themselves establish why a regional access check failed.
No. Google’s built-in Gemini in Chrome feature has its own rollout, eligibility and browser settings. Visiting gemini.google.com in Chrome is a different entry point, and Horizon’s Chrome extension is a separate browser-connection tool. Use the requirements for the feature showing the error.
Keep the account, device and test prompt the same. Check the active VPN location, reconnect with another available location, and remove an extra proxy from the comparison if appropriate. If the VPN itself cannot connect, review Auto or Connection Compatibility. Send support the exact error and the comparison results without including private prompts or credentials.
Use the guest or free access offered in your Horizon app or extension, if available, and follow its displayed allowance and location limits. Test an actual Gemini reply on your own device and connection before choosing the access you need. Free access is subject to the current policy shown in the product.
No. Smart DNS and the full VPN app are different connection options. For Gemini on a supported phone or computer, start with the native VPN app; for supported browser-only traffic, consider the browser extension. Do not treat a Smart DNS setting as proof of a full encrypted VPN tunnel or successful Gemini API access.
Choose the Horizon app for your device, test the Gemini task you need, and ask us for help if the route needs attention.
