The kill switch blocks internet traffic if the VPN connection drops, so nothing leaves your device outside the tunnel. Turn it on when traffic must never travel unprotected, and leave it off when you prefer the connection to stay usable while the app reconnects.

Choose a server closer to you, try the WireGuard protocol, and test again on a wired connection or a stronger Wi-Fi signal. A very distant server and a busy local network are the usual reasons for a slow VPN connection.
