WebRTC leaks — what they are and how to prevent them
3 min read·Updated May 20, 2026
WebRTC can reveal your real IP even through a VPN. Here's how to block it.
WebRTC is a browser technology for video calls and real-time communication. It can bypass your VPN and expose your real IP address to websites — even when connected to a VPN.
Test for a WebRTC leak
- 1Connect to HorizonVPN
- 2Visit ipleak.net
- 3Look at the WebRTC section — if it shows your real IP (not the VPN IP), you have a leak
Fix by browser
- HorizonVPN app: Enable WebRTC Leak Protection in Settings → Privacy
- Firefox: visit about:config → set media.peerconnection.enabled to false
- Chrome: install the "WebRTC Leak Prevent" extension
- Brave: Settings → Privacy → WebRTC IP Handling Policy → Disable non-proxied UDP
