START WITH WHAT YOU WANT TO WATCH

Why use a VPN on a Samsung TV?

People look for a TV VPN when a streaming service, video or website is blocked, or the content available changes with their location. Horizon’s Smart DNS gives compatible Samsung TVs a way to access supported services through another connection region.

Stream from another region

Use an available Smart DNS location to access supported region-restricted streaming content, including Netflix. Tell support the service and region you want before choosing a plan.

Unblock YouTube and websites

Watch supported YouTube content and open blocked websites in your Samsung TV’s browser. If a destination needs support, send us its address and the error you see.

Keep up with TV from home

When you travel or move, use a supported location to reach familiar catch-up TV and streaming services on the big screen. Your streaming subscription and the app still need to be available to you.

Watch live TV and sports

Use Smart DNS with supported, licensed live-TV, sports and IPTV services. Ask us about your provider and TV model; this does not include a channel subscription or a playlist.

Service access depends on the destination, selected location and current support. Smart DNS does not unlock paid subscriptions or guarantee every catalogue, live event or service plan.

YOUR SERVICES, ON A BIGGER SCREEN

Streaming, music, social and AI websites

Use Smart DNS for supported destinations across entertainment and the web. On Samsung TV, use the service’s compatible TV app or its TV-compatible website; Smart DNS does not turn a phone or Android app into a Tizen app.

Films and series

Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Prime Video

Access supported regional streaming services through the connection location you choose. You still need the relevant subscription and a compatible app or web player.

Live and catch-up TV

BBC iPlayer and licensed IPTV

Watch supported catch-up programmes, live channels and sports from your provider. Service eligibility, regional licensing and the player’s Samsung TV support still apply.

Video and music

YouTube, Twitch and Spotify

Bring supported videos, live streams and music to your TV. If the provider has no compatible Samsung app, check whether its web player works in your TV browser.

Social and AI websites

Facebook, Instagram, ChatGPT and Claude

Reach supported social networks and AI websites in the TV browser when their web interface is compatible. A connected keyboard can make typing easier; use your phone or computer if a website does not support the TV browser.

TV apps and browser support vary by model, region and service. The examples describe destinations to use with Smart DNS, not a promise that every service provides a Samsung app or that its entire website works on a TV.

Smart DNS, VPN over DNS or Proxy over DNS?

Horizon Smart DNSAn illustration of a television connected through a home router and Horizon Smart DNS to a supported streaming service. Only supported connections use the selected service region.
Your Samsung TVYour home internetHorizon Smart DNSSupported service

On this page, these names describe the same Horizon service: use your TV’s DNS settings to route supported connections through a location available in your dashboard. You do not need to install a VPN app on the television.

This is useful on Samsung Tizen TVs because Horizon’s Android app is not a Tizen TV app. Samsung’s Apps store and Android’s Google Play store are different platforms.

Smart DNS changes the connection region seen by supported services. It does not create a full-device encrypted VPN tunnel. For encrypted VPN traffic, use a supported device or ask about a compatible VPN router.

FROM DASHBOARD TO BIG SCREEN

How to set up Smart DNS on a Samsung TV

Use the current DNS address in your HorizonVPN dashboard. The steps below cover common Samsung menus; wording can differ by model, software and menu language.

Before you start

  • A Samsung TV with manual DNS settings
  • A Horizon plan with Smart DNS access
  • A phone or computer on the same home internet
  1. Connect your TV to the internet

Use Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable. Open a normal TV app first to check that the television is online. Some Samsung models do not have an Ethernet port.

  2. Open your Smart DNS dashboard

On a phone or computer using the same internet as your TV, open Smart DNS in your HorizonVPN dashboard. Turn off mobile data and any VPN on that phone or computer while authorising, so you activate the TV’s actual home connection.

  3. Choose a location and authorise

For streaming and websites, use Full Proxy mode and save it if needed. Choose an available location before authorising your current public IPv4 address, then copy the current DNS server address. Do not enter the TV’s private local IP address.

  4. Enter the DNS address on your TV

Open Network Status, then IP Settings. Leave IP Setting on automatic. Change only DNS Setting to Enter Manually, enter the DNS server address from your dashboard, then confirm with OK.

  5. Reconnect and open your service

Reconnect the TV, fully close and reopen the streaming app or browser, then test the service you want. Keep your original settings so you can return DNS Setting to automatic at any time.

Find the right Samsung menu

Most 2022–2026 models

Settings → All Settings → Connection / Connections → Network → Network Status → IP Settings

Many 2017–2021 models

Settings → General → Network → Network Status → IP Settings

Then change DNS only

DNS Setting → Enter Manually → DNS Server → OK

Illustrated network settings, not a Samsung screenshot. Keep IP automatic and change DNS only; menu names vary by model.

Samsung usually shows one DNS Server field. If your TV has one field, enter one current DNS address from the dashboard; do not put two addresses in the same field.

AN APP IS NOT THE ONLY WAY

Choose the right setup for your Samsung TV

For supported sites and streaming services, start with Smart DNS directly on the TV. If you need a different route or encryption, choose the option that fits your equipment.

Smart DNS on the TV

Enter the DNS address in a compatible TV’s network settings. A practical starting point for supported streaming services and blocked websites, without a TV app.

Follow the TV steps

Smart DNS on your router

If your router allows custom DNS, compatible devices that follow its DNS settings can use the same setup. Authorise that home connection and check each service. This is not a router VPN and does not encrypt the home network.

Check my router with support

VPN on a separate device

Use the Horizon app on a supported Android TV or Google TV device connected to HDMI. The VPN covers that device’s traffic, not apps running inside the Samsung TV. Ask support before planning a full VPN-router setup.

CONNECTING IS NOT THE SAME AS INSTALLING

Connection region, apps and your Samsung account

Choose the connection region for supported services in the Horizon dashboard. The country attached to your Samsung account, the Smart Hub app catalogue and a streaming account’s billing region are separate settings.

If an app is missing from Samsung Apps, changing DNS alone does not install it. Check the TV model and Samsung’s official app guidance; avoid factory resets or hidden service-menu changes just to follow this setup.

A few things worth knowing before you connect

Can I install HorizonVPN directly on a Samsung Tizen TV?

Horizon’s Android app is not a Samsung Tizen app. On compatible Samsung TVs, use Horizon Smart DNS through manual DNS settings. If you use a separate supported Android TV device over HDMI, you can install the Android app on that device instead.

Can I use Horizon to unblock Netflix and YouTube on Samsung TV?

Yes. Horizon Smart DNS helps access supported Netflix, YouTube and other blocked or region-restricted services on compatible Samsung TVs. Availability varies by service, location and service plan. Ask support about the content or service you need; not every catalogue, plan or live event is supported.

Does VPN over DNS encrypt all my Samsung TV traffic?

No. The VPN over DNS or Proxy over DNS names on this page refer to Horizon Smart DNS, not a full encrypted VPN tunnel. If encryption is your goal, use a supported VPN device or check VPN-router compatibility with support.

Does it work over both Wi-Fi and Ethernet?

Yes, on compatible Samsung TVs with manual DNS settings. Configure the connection the TV is actually using. If you switch between Wi-Fi and Ethernet, check the DNS settings again and make sure you authorised the public internet connection used by that network.

Will it change my Samsung account or Smart Hub country?

It changes the connection region seen by supported services through the location you select in Horizon. It does not edit your Samsung account country, install a missing app or change a streaming account’s billing details.

Which DNS address should I enter?

Use the current DNS server address shown in your own HorizonVPN Smart DNS dashboard. Do not copy an example address from a Samsung article or use a public resolver as a substitute. If the TV has one DNS field, enter one address and ask support if you are unsure which to use.

Can I use Smart DNS on any subscription?

Smart DNS access, locations and authorisation limits depend on your Horizon plan and account. Check the plan features and dashboard, or ask support about your Samsung model and intended services before purchasing.

How do I undo the DNS setup?

Open the TV’s network IP Settings and return DNS Setting to automatic, then reconnect the TV. If you changed the router instead, restore the router’s previous DNS configuration. No factory reset is needed to undo a DNS change.
