A different route when Discord will not load
A network restriction can stop Discord before you reach your servers. Horizon sends your connection through an available VPN location, with multiple connection options when one route does not work on your network.
Keep protocol selection simple
Start with Auto. Horizon selects an available connection option; the protocol choices you can use depend on your app, device, account and available routes.
Adjust for a restrictive network
If the first connection fails, check Connection Compatibility and try another available location. Reconnect before testing Discord again. Compatibility and VPN location are separate controls.

Discord access depends on where you connect
Country-wide restrictions, an internet provider or a local network can affect Discord access. Travellers can face different results on roaming, hotel Wi-Fi and a local SIM, even with the same Discord account.
OONI has documented Discord blocking in Türkiye and Russia. Its findings describe tested networks; they are not a live status check of every provider or a test of HorizonVPN.
A VPN changes the network route. It does not reverse an account suspension, grant access to a private server or fix a service outage.

How to use a VPN with Discord
Check Discord Status first. If the service is available but your connection is restricted, work through these steps on the device where you use Discord.
Install the HorizonVPN app
Use the official download for your device. Sign in, or use guest access if offered. Available locations, usage allowances and features follow the access shown in the app.
Connect before opening Discord
Choose Auto or an available VPN location and connect. Fully quit Discord, then reopen it after the VPN is connected. On hotel Wi-Fi, finish the network’s sign-in page before connecting the VPN.
Check chat, then check a call
Open your usual server and check that messages load. Next, join a voice channel or call you are allowed to use. Hearing and being heard are separate checks; loading the website alone does not verify voice chat.

Set up Discord on your device
Install Horizon on the device that runs Discord. A browser extension on your laptop does not cover the Discord app on your phone or computer.

Connect Horizon, quit Discord from the system tray and reopen it. Test messages and a voice channel. If the call connects but your microphone is silent, check Windows microphone permission and Discord’s selected input device.

Discord voice needs more than a page that loads
Discord’s voice traffic uses UDP. Its official troubleshooting guide says a VPN connection needs UDP support for voice. Use the full Horizon app and an available route that supports the call; a successful web login does not prove the media connection works.

Join your usual voice channel, confirm that you can hear other people and ask them to confirm they can hear you. Then test video or screen sharing if you need those features.
RTC Connecting or No Route?
These errors can involve the VPN route, a firewall or the network. Reconnect with another available location or connection option. If the problem continues, send support the exact error, device and internet provider.
Connected, but no microphone?
Check the input device, mute state, channel permissions and microphone permission. On desktop, Discord’s Voice & Video settings include a Mic Test. Changing your IP address does not repair a denied microphone permission.
No single route can promise lower ping or uninterrupted calls on every network. Compare call quality on your own connection after each change.

A few things to know before you connect
Can a VPN help when Discord is blocked?
A VPN can provide another network route when a provider or local network blocks Discord. Use Horizon’s full app, connect before opening Discord and test both chat and voice. Results depend on the network and available connection options; a VPN cannot restore a complete internet outage.
Which VPN protocol should I use for Discord?
Start with Auto rather than copying a protocol name from an old guide. If it does not connect, try Connection Compatibility or another available location. Discord voice needs UDP support, so check the call itself and ask support about the route if RTC errors remain.
Can I use the browser extension for the Discord app?
The Horizon Chrome and Firefox extensions proxy browser traffic only. They do not cover the Discord desktop or mobile app. For this guide’s app and voice steps, use the full HorizonVPN app on the same device as Discord.
Why do messages work while voice is stuck on RTC Connecting?
Messages and real-time media use different connections. The selected route may load the app while voice is interrupted by UDP handling, a firewall or network filtering. Check the VPN route’s UDP support and follow Discord’s voice troubleshooting; this error alone does not prove censorship.
Can I use the same Discord account?
Use your existing Discord account and follow its normal verification steps. Connecting through a VPN does not change your server permissions, remove an account restriction or include Discord Nitro.
Will a VPN lower my Discord ping?
A different route can improve a particular connection, but it can also add latency. Test voice quality and stability on the network you actually use. Horizon does not guarantee a lower ping on every provider, location or call.
Can I try Horizon before choosing a plan?
Guest or free access may be offered in the app. Check its current locations and allowance before testing Discord. Premium access, device limits and available features depend on the plan shown to your account.
Does every Discord connection error need a VPN?
No. Check service outages, Wi-Fi login, app updates, microphone permissions and account messages first. A VPN helps change the network route; it does not fix every audio, device or account problem.
