Work through these steps in order — most issues are resolved within the first three steps.
Step 1: Check your internet connection
The VPN requires a working internet connection. Open a browser without the VPN and visit any website. If that fails, fix your internet first.
Step 2: Try a different server
The server may be temporarily overloaded. Open the server list and try a different server in the same country.
Step 3: Switch VPN protocol
- 1Go to Settings → Protocol
- 2If on WireGuard, try OpenVPN UDP
- 3If OpenVPN UDP fails, try OpenVPN TCP (more firewall-friendly)
- 4On corporate or school networks, use OpenVPN TCP port 443
Step 4: Check firewall and antivirus
Your firewall or antivirus may be blocking the VPN client. Temporarily disable your firewall and try connecting. If it works, add HorizonVPN as an exception.
Step 5: Restart the app and device
- 1Fully close HorizonVPN (right-click tray icon → Quit)
- 2Wait 30 seconds, reopen, and try connecting
- 3If that fails, restart your device
Step 6: Reinstall HorizonVPN
A clean reinstall resolves corrupted files or driver issues. Uninstall, restart your device, then download and install the latest version.
If you're behind a DPI firewall — common in China, Russia, UAE, and corporate networks — enable Obfuscation mode in Settings → Advanced → Obfuscation before connecting.
