YOUR CONNECTION, YOUR POSSIBILITIES

Twitch with Horizon: a route for watching or broadcasting

Use Horizon to manage the connection for watching Twitch or broadcasting from a supported device. Pick the route that covers your player or encoder, then test video delivery and upload stability as separate tasks.

Features and device limits depend on your plan. Choose the setup that fits your device.

The short answer

A viewer receives video; a broadcaster sends it to a Twitch ingest server. Those paths need different checks. Horizon’s native app covers its configured supported device connection, while the browser extension covers supported browser traffic and does not route a separate OBS process. Neither changes Twitch account enforcement decisions.

Make more of your connection

Choose a viewer setup

For supported browser viewing, use the Horizon extension or native app. Check video and chat separately: a working chat connection does not prove the live video delivery path is healthy.

Give your encoder a proper test

For OBS or another native encoder on a supported device, use a device connection that actually covers it. Compare upload stability before your broadcast instead of judging readiness from a fast webpage download.

Change fewer variables

Keep the same ingest server, encoder settings and network for a route comparison. This makes bitrate drops and reconnections easier to interpret than changing the VPN, resolution and ingest destination together.

The details that make a difference

Broadcast traffic has an ingest destination

Twitch documents encoders sending video to an ingest server before it is prepared for viewers. The creator’s upload path and the audience’s playback path are different parts of a broadcast.

Inspector can examine stream health

Twitch Inspector provides broadcast diagnostics and a stream-test workflow. Use its official instructions to compare stability without exposing your stream key or assuming the test proves every viewer’s experience.

Account appeals follow a separate process

Twitch’s Community Guidelines provide an appeal path for enforcement. A changed network address does not remove a suspension or chat ban, and should not be treated as a substitute for an appeal.

Get connected, step by step

  1. Decide whether you watch or send

Identify the player or encoder and its device. Check Twitch status for a wider incident before troubleshooting one local route, especially if chat, login or video fails for others too.

  2. Connect with the correct scope

Use the browser extension for supported browser viewing or the native Horizon app for a configured device connection. Do not assume the extension covers OBS, a console or another browser.

  3. Compare a representative session

Viewers should test the same channel and quality. Creators should use Twitch Inspector’s test guidance, keeping ingest and encoder settings fixed, and inspect bitrate stability and reconnections before going live.

What to check

Find the right next step

What you noticeWhat to check
Chat works but the video buffersTest the same channel at another quality and check Twitch video status. Chat success does not establish healthy media delivery.
OBS drops frames after connectingConfirm OBS uses the intended device route; compare the same ingest and bitrate with Inspector. Check encoder overload separately from network loss.
A suspension or chat ban remainsUse Twitch’s official appeal or moderation process. Changing network location does not reinstate an account or override a channel’s rules.

Your questions, answered

Does the Horizon browser extension cover OBS?

No. OBS is a separate native process. Use the native Horizon app on a supported device for its configured device connection, and verify the encoder’s actual upload route before relying on it for a broadcast.

Why can chat load while the video buffers?

Chat and video use different delivery paths and demands. Test another quality on the same channel, check Twitch status and compare the viewing connection. A working chat pane does not prove the media path is stable.

Can a VPN fix a Twitch account suspension?

No. Account and channel enforcement are handled by Twitch and its moderators. Use the official appeal process if you believe a decision was wrong; Horizon does not restore accounts or offer ban evasion.

How should I compare broadcast stability?

Use Twitch Inspector’s official stream-test workflow. Keep the network, ingest server, bitrate and encoder settings fixed while changing only the route. Compare sustained stability and reconnections instead of one peak upload-speed reading.

Does changing my public IP guarantee DDoS protection?

No. Routing through a VPN is not a guarantee against every attack or service outage. Protect your stream key and account, avoid publishing connection details, and use Twitch’s safety tools for problems affecting your channel.
