YOUR CONNECTION, YOUR POSSIBILITIES

Netflix with a VPN: know what your plan can play

Use Horizon to manage your supported device or browser connection for Netflix, with a clear understanding of Netflix’s own VPN limits. Check your plan and title before treating a changed network location as a new catalogue.

Features and device limits depend on your plan. Choose the setup that fits your device.

The short answer

Netflix says VPN viewing may be limited to titles it has worldwide rights to show. VPNs are not supported for its ad-supported experience or live events. Horizon provides a connection route; it does not change those rules, your subscription or the country attached to your Netflix account.

Make more of your connection

Choose the scope you need

Use a native Horizon app for the configured connection on a supported viewing device. The browser extension covers supported traffic in that browser, which suits web viewing without routing a separate Netflix app.

Explain a smaller catalogue

If search results change after connecting, compare title availability before reinstalling apps. Netflix’s worldwide-rights catalogue is a service rule, and a healthy tunnel can still show fewer titles.

Test the actual screen

Check a phone, computer and television separately. A working browser session does not establish TV playback; compatible Smart DNS setups route supported destinations without creating a full encrypted TV tunnel.

Plan type matters

Netflix’s official VPN guidance excludes the ad-supported experience. A valid subscription and a connected VPN can therefore still produce an unsupported viewing situation rather than a Horizon connection fault.

Live events have a separate limit

Netflix also says live events cannot be watched through a VPN. A film playing successfully does not establish that an upcoming live broadcast will work on the same route.

Travel affects more than IP

Netflix explains that travelling can affect available titles, audio, subtitles, age ratings and downloads. Account country and Household guidance are separate from selecting a VPN exit.

Get connected, step by step

  1. Check the plan and programme

Confirm your Netflix plan, the exact title and whether it is a live event. Review the current VPN and travel guidance before choosing a viewing method.

  2. Connect on the viewing device

Open Horizon on a supported device or use the official browser extension for browser playback. Keep one intended route active rather than stacking multiple VPN or proxy tools.

  3. Verify the player, not just sign-in

Play an eligible title, test seeking and note the exact error if it fails. For a VPN-specific restriction, follow Netflix’s guidance and compare on a direct connection where permitted.

What you noticeWhat to check
Some titles disappear after connectingCheck Netflix’s worldwide-licence limitation for VPN viewing. Do not assume a missing title means the tunnel is broken.
Films work but a live event failsNetflix does not support live-event viewing over VPN. Check the event guidance and use a permitted connection.
Netflix loads but video failsRecord the player error and check plan type, device support and VPN detection. Loading the homepage only proves that stage works.

Your questions, answered

Why are fewer Netflix titles available with a VPN?

Netflix says VPN viewing can be limited to content licensed worldwide. The catalogue can therefore shrink even while the connection works. Check Netflix’s availability guidance rather than expecting your entire home library on every exit.

Can I use a VPN with an ad-supported Netflix plan?

Netflix says VPN viewing is unsupported with an ad-supported experience. Horizon cannot change that plan restriction. Review Netflix’s current plan guidance and use a viewing method the service supports.

Will a VPN work for Netflix live events?

Netflix explicitly excludes live events from VPN viewing. Test and prepare a permitted connection before the event; successful playback of an on-demand episode does not establish live-event compatibility.

Does Horizon change my Netflix Household or account country?

No. Your VPN exit does not perform an account-country update or resolve Household verification. Follow Netflix’s official travel, moving and Household processes for the account or television involved.

Which Horizon setup should I use on my TV?

Use a supported native app where available. For a TV without one, confirm the exact device and destination before using Smart DNS. Your Netflix plan, device compatibility and VPN rules still determine what can play.
