Find the right BBC service
Identify whether you are using BBC iPlayer, BBC.com or an international BBC app subscription. They have different content and access arrangements; paying for one does not establish access to every BBC product.
YOUR CONNECTION, YOUR POSSIBILITIES
Use Horizon to manage a supported device or browser connection, while keeping BBC iPlayer’s UK viewing and TV Licence requirements separate. A UK network address alone is not viewing eligibility.
Features and device limits depend on your plan. Choose the setup that fits your device.
For BBC iPlayer, first check that you meet the service’s viewing requirements, including the TV Licence requirement for on-demand BBC programmes. If you are in the UK and see an outside-UK message, investigate the device’s actual route and the BBC’s location guidance. An international BBC.com subscription is a different product.
BBC iPlayer

Use the native Horizon app for a supported device connection, or the extension for supported playback in its browser. Check the television separately instead of relying on the connection status shown on a nearby phone.
Record the programme, device, current country and exact message. For a false UK-location result, a comparison on another permitted network can help separate ISP geolocation from an account or player problem.
KNOW YOUR SERVICE
GOV.UK states that a TV Licence is needed to watch or download programmes on BBC iPlayer. The requirement is not limited to watching a live BBC television channel.
BBC’s international help distinguishes its BBC.com and app subscriptions from UK platforms. A UK TV Licence does not replace the subscription arrangements or rights restrictions of those international products.
A VPN changes the network route, not your physical location, account declarations or licence. Follow iPlayer’s current location and viewing guidance instead of treating a UK exit as a promise of worldwide access.
See the setup
Open the official BBC iPlayer service and review its current viewing guidance. Check the relevant TV Licence requirement before troubleshooting the connection or choosing a subscription.
Identify whether the actual player uses a native app, browser proxy or another network route. If a VPN or proxy causes a location message, follow the BBC’s official troubleshooting.
Try the same programme and device on an eligible connection. Note whether sign-in, the programme page or playback fails, and send the exact message through official support if needed.
What to check
| What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|
| Outside-UK message while you are in the UK | Check for an active VPN/proxy, then compare a permitted direct network. Consult BBC help and your ISP if location identification remains wrong. |
| BBC.com asks for payment | Confirm which BBC product you opened. International BBC.com access and UK iPlayer or TV Licence arrangements are different. |
| A phone works but the TV does not | Check the TV’s app and own network path. The phone’s Horizon connection does not automatically extend to the television. |
Tell our team the service, device, network and exact error. We can help you find the right connection method without sharing passwords.
Get connection supportNo. BBC iPlayer and the international BBC.com or BBC app offerings have different access arrangements and content rights. Check the product named on your account and bill before buying a subscription to solve an iPlayer problem.
Yes. GOV.UK includes watching or downloading BBC iPlayer programmes in the TV Licence requirement. It is not only a live-TV rule. Refer to the official licensing guidance for your circumstances.
The service may be identifying your connection differently from your physical location. Check the route actually used by the player, including VPNs or proxies, and follow BBC location help. An ISP can investigate incorrect network geolocation.
No. A network address does not provide a TV Licence, change your physical location or create viewing rights. Use the service’s current eligibility guidance; Horizon does not promise overseas iPlayer access.
Include the TV model, app version, programme, current country, exact error and connection method. State whether the same programme works on another eligible device. Hide account details and network credentials in any screenshot.
